CHUCKTOWN – David C. Jefferson, 37, of Chicago was shot and arrested earlier yesterday afternoon after he approached the Union Credit One bank with a gun.

Undercover officer, Elliot Mess, was on scene when the alleged robber was noticed to be loitering outside of the bank. Officer Mess then started at Jefferson. Jefferson then pulled out a shotgun he had concealed in a flower delivery box to which Mess opened fire on the robber.

Witness, Jeff Naggler said, “I happen to look out the window when I see a guy walking up to the Credit [Union] One right across the street. I see this other guy come running up behind him. He pulls out a shotgun right there in the parking lot. He starts pointing the gun at the guy running up towards him. The guy that was running up towards him pulls out a gun of his own, like a pistol, you know? He aims the gun at him and shoots him three times.”

Naggler was about 60 feet from the incident at the Arby’s across the street.

Officer Elliot Mess, who had been suspended previously for “inappropriate” discharge of his firearm while on duty, fired two rounds at the robber.

Three rounds were found at the scene and discharged from Mess’ pistol.

After opening fire on Jefferson, Officer Mess then handcuffed the suspect, read him his rights and contacted the Tamoon Police Department for assistance.

Tamoon EMTs made their way on scene shortly after police arrived. Jefferson was transported with a police escort to Mercy Hospital where he was treated for his wounds.

Jefferson’s wife said he served a couple of years for assault about 5 years ago.

“He’s a no-good bum who ain’t worked an honest day in his life,” Jefferson’s wife said. “It don’t surprise me he’s in trouble again.”

Jefferson has been charged with unlawful use of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a police officer, attempted murder, operating a vehicle with expired license tags and possession of cannabis.
